In general, the best pet foods are sold in pet specialty stores and not your typical grocery store. Don't be fooled by television commercials, advertisements and/or fancy packaging. Don't pay filet mignon prices for hot dog quality foods.

Just as in people foods, the most important thing to reference is the ingredient label located in the back of the product, notice each ingredient and its order. The first ingredient is typically the primary ingredient and the largest, the second is the second largest ingredient and amount and so on.

Watch for these words, by-products, BHT, BHA, and especially Ethoxyquin in the food. For the recall (4/4/07) watch for the main ingredient being Wheat or Grain !!!

As of April 4, 2007 the FDA is saying "Stay away from products that list wheat or grain, or animal byproducts in the top ingredients.  Be cautious of any "Wheat Gluten or grain" ingredients !!!! Unless you know the grain is from the U.S. However, BE SAFE AND ASK !!!!

To minimize allergies in your pet use a lamb and rice product.
